Hello hello there!

As you can see I haven't been updating this blog for a very long time, because I decided to use facebook as a more efficient way to update my latest art and abouts.

Can anybody pronounce cognitive? 'Cause I can't, like the time I can't pronounce apocalypse :)

Soooo, school's started yet again, got two COMP papers to do, one's video editing (Final Cut Pro) with Game Maker in the second module, one big fatty Design Paper (one part focused on Typography and the other just designy stuff), and an Internet Application paper, get to learn about Java.

I went to this lecture with a few friends for the hell of it, and got so bored that I scribbled an entire refill page of well, scribbles, inspired by Michael Jackson's song Dirty Diana, so I tried to create what Diana would look like, frankly I started with the girl on the left then to the right, but I still like the one that I started with the best.

The best part of this is?

When we came out of the lecture, a friend of mine said to me "You know the people that was sitting behind you, they were whispering to each other things like 'oh dear she's not going to pass this paper if she does nothing but draw in it'."

I still intend to go, I mean, what better way to start scribbling than being in an environment of pure uncomfortable boredom? Maybe I should go out of my way to do something disturbing like an eye staring back at them or something, I should, and it can be my weekly Psych drawing class XD

I like where this is going.

Got my previous semester's works back, am thinking 'bout selling some of them, can't keep them all in my dingy flat :P

I did this for my project, we had to use the programme Illustrator to create well, an illustration consisting of a dragon and a human being.

It is A3 in size, quality print and mounted on a black foamboard, ready to be displayed, it'd make an ideal present for anyone who has the hots for orange-haired boys and the squee for baby dragons!

Hello, if you stop by and read me bloggie every so often, well I finally updated after all this time.

Updates:

Finally got over the loss of MJ, now I can listen to his music and see imageries of him without feeling bwahaha.

Finished one semester so got one more semester to go for this year, so am currently on holiday.

I learned new skills, they are photo-manipulation with Photoshop, advanced Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, colour theory and some drawing.

Did I mention that I got an on going part time job as well? It's nothing to do with art or design but it does pay the rent and the bill. So now, I have the luxury to get one off freelance work but still able to spend moolah on art materials, I made a nebula guinea pig the other day, but I'll upload it some other time. I went hunting for one off jobs, got two actually, now I have to update my porfolio and CV as well as write two completely different cover letters, fun fun. Why am I updating this bloggie? I felt like ranting when I looked at my old CVs and was like whoaaaaaaaa what the hell is all this, there're so many unnecessary bits to be picked out and blaaaarghhh. Ah well, time to do a bit of CV clean up I guess.

No, it are vinyl artwork yo.

And here's the bum bum bit.

And yes, this is a big fat post.

They were all photographed on an A1 sized cardboard, I know, it's a lame justification of of an explation of forgetting to measure them as I photographed them, reaaaaaaaaaaal smart.

Little vinyl works, gotta set up my Paypal account before I can sell them on Etsy, don't wanna use Credit card :P Oooh scary, American dollar conversion.

If you click on them to enlarge them you'll see that they're vinyl stickers still stuck to the adhesive paper they came with and I just cut away what I choose to get the resulted imagery.

Oh hai thar! (Sorry Rache I knicked this off ya).

It's been over a month since I've last updated, so I'm going to take this chance to update what I haven't updated but which should have been updated so now updated, finally.

First up, my submissions to FEW, never before seen images! As you can see the two Taniwhas have already been purchased :) They're all done in pencil/pen but pimped up via Photoshop.

Hmmm for some reason the Taniwhas always look shoddy when I upload them via blogger.

I've also created a new Facebook "fan page" that seperates my business from my personal life, if ya become a fan you'll have access to my awesome artworks :P also the latest news of art sales too.

Technically it happened nearly 3 weeks ago, but here goes!

By project, I mean that I was working on a campaign which aimed to help Student Job Search (if you don't live in New Zealand, it's a government run agency that's existed for the last 27 or so years that help students to find jobs and for employers to list jobs, anything from casual to permanent part time, absolutely free!

They screen and short list students for you so yeah, you get the idea, anybody have anything similar to that in their home country?) to persuade more employers out there (anybody from stressed housewives, small to medium business owners or just general office administration, retail and hospitality) to hire more students through them, 'cause of the recession (yes yes yes the R word, man that comes around tons), there had been a 20% drop of employers listing jobs with SJS, ironically around 20% more students signed up to it, you get the idea.

OK, so here ws the process~~~

I saw the advertisement, which surprise surprise, two weeks til the dead line.
Planned around ideas, but for some reason due to my not so PC nature I was very fond of the voraephilic undertone, which reflected in my initial 'Sample Us!' campaign through my two poster designs, as seen below. Believe me, toning down was the hardest!

So hold on a minute, why am I making such a big fuss about this?

'Cause you know why?

If I didn't start this blog to begin with, I wouldn't have done squat all, I wouldn't be drawing, I wouldn't be manipulating images, I wouldn't be scanning, I wouldn't be editing, I wouldn't be thinking, my brain would've just been rotting away to all Hell!

In other words if I didn't have my dear audience, especially Awesome Sara, the queen of all queens of champion blog commentators, my silent fans (yes I know you guys exist! Speak out or I shall prod your browser to all buggery!) that leaves endearing notes to know that yes, I've seen your work and I know you do exist, and good on you for moving along with post-graduation blues and actually trying to do something with yo' life!

Hence why I'm skipping my unsupervised lab time today and do this big arse bloggie post 'cause I think my audience deserve it! Also I need some time to enjoy coffee, 'cause the reggae music at uni cafe just doesn't cut it with moi.

OK, so here goes the first e-mail I sent them, we had to give a CV, a Cover Letter (less than 200 words), and obviously portfolio, I no can give you me CV, but I can give you my Cover Letter, which follows before the images, yes of course they wanted a portfolio! :P

Dear Project Manager

My name is Ariel Ni-Wei Huang and I am a New Zealand Citizen. I have a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Auckland and will commence study on a degree in Computer Graphic Design at the University of Waikato from this year’s second semester on wards.

I believe I can achieve the objective of the campaign successfully because I possess strong determination, relevant design skills and I am very familiar with how the dynamics between employers, students and SJS staff works therefore I know the kind of environment I am designing for, professional and ethical.

I have designed two posters for what I believe that the hypothetical brief would ask of me, which is to boldly present the objectives of SJS which in this case, strongly appeals to the financial advantage and user friendliness of the employers.

This is a post of personal bemusement, it is by no means trying to take credit of what isn't mine.

The photographs of the male models are by the photographer Dan Martensen from his Portfolio 2 section, the female model in the peacock dress is from Portfolio 3.

I was visiting Gangsta Bride's Victorian Hair section, when she referenced the inspiration via the photographs of Dan Martensen.

And curiously I went to check it out, and found out more than I have expected.

I usually draw guys at the top of my head, but to find dopplegangers out there well man, I don't know it's either awesome, or just plain weird XD.

I just chucked this together 'cause whoever did this dress, I'd love to wear it to my hypothetical wedding in the future, it's just plain awesome! When I did the sketch I didn't know what was quite the feeling I was trying to capture but this just explained it all!

This one ain't done, but I decided to show y'all anyways.

Not sure if I like the guy's hair so much, but the girl's hair definitely has potential.

OK, I hardly, hardly ever, go for pretty boys, he just appeared ok? i first did him on the right (the profile one) and then I was like hmmmm, he doesn't look so bad, so I did another one of him on the left, which miraculously his hair is sitll identical XD

For some reason the girl looks very Japanese, as in, Eido period wood block print Japanese woman, yeah, odd. Don't agree with the big lump on her head, but will need to adjust it sometimes, flow doesn't look too bad I guess.

The guy's hair sucks, the girls' one's better. Also like the ambiguous lines that are supposed to show either she's on her side, or other random angle.

I know realistically speaking, her neck would be broken by now XD, for some reason I like her hair better than his. Tell me why!

Like the hair, like his right hand on my left, but not the face T_T

I like her hands, but something's not so right about her face, plus I'm not happy with the big hands too

The original idea was just 'a person holding a cel phone', alright, I like the jeans and the hair, but something about the way that she's holding the phone was rather off, and that she looks preggy when she's not supposed to be XD

Glorified sketch of a quick concept? Totally got her hands in a warped as perspective. Blehh.

Originally I messed up the guy's eye but then I was like heeeeeeey, the f#ck#d nose and eyes actually go quite well together, meep.

Cabin Fever Beast

I've been reliving my childhood through watching Disney's Beauty and the Beast (on VH1!) as well as listening to the original soundtrack non-stop.

And without a doubt the Beast is my favourite character XD

The top one was me trying to remember what the Beast looked like at the top of my head without looking for reference, which, of course it's nothing comparing to the guy who did the character design XD

The one below was based on a concept of a so called 'Beast', what if he wasn't animalistic in terms of looks but just got a real severe case of Cabin Fever?

Lucky he has a doggie to keep him company, originally I was going to edit out the other doodles on the other side but thought you guys may want to see my not so complete side of drawings :P

I've been:

organising to go back to school.
paper recycling (yay I is so glam).
once again job hunting, except for part time ones.

I want to be:

more savvy in computer stuff, especially websites (htmls really cramp my style, if you haven't noticed my blog has a really really crap layout).
employable, you heard me!

I've already:

handed in my resignation letter, so this week will be my last time in my current job, I decided that if you hang onto it for too long it just becomes a crutch, the more desperate I am the more out there I will be. So far, I've sent out 5 job apps, so wish me luck.

Awesome Brisbane Trip Part 3

Somewhere in the CBD of Brissie, didn't like the shop but love the colours xD

One thing I LOVE about Brisbane is that there are chocolate/lolly stores EVERYWHERE. And I'm not kidding, even in the most generic shopping malls and in the middle of nowhere like Coolangatta.

Gotta love the window display man, mmmmmm jelly belly, you can customise the flavour selections like you do in the official M&M store in Time Square New York! Nice!

Walking along side the river (can't remember the name, but just I just walked along side of it), the weather was just awesome.

Saw this hair salon, apparently the glass painting was done by a local artist currently working at GoMA, got the guy to write down her name and phone number but I lost it T___T I asked if she had a blogspot but I don't she did, get blogging people!

I really liked this advertising campaign, at first I didn't get what the fishie was for but it didn't take long before I caught on. Also love the balance of the orange and the blue (actually, why is it that most of the time when you get gold fishie on commercial they're always orange? That's just biased!)

MYO (Make Your Own), the freshest sandwich ever! Sh#t expensive but totally worth it, mmmmmmm nom nom nom nom nom, rhy bread and everything, if I ever come back to Brissie and if they are still there (I hope they will be) I'll definitely be back there again.

Right, now where is that bowl of beef noodle soup? I need my iron dammit!

Awesome Brisbane Trip Part 2

Meow meow meow.

I finally made me pilgrimage to GoMA (Gallery of Modern Art) and was really lucky to check out this exhibition, and the best part is that it's FREE! Nice innit? It had both Chinese and Asian Australian artists in there so it was a nice combo, and being Taiwanese (politically speaking China's little cousin) it made me felt quite emotionally connected, having read literature related to the Cultural Revolution.

I know everyone's views on the Cultural Revolution was different depending on your background and how you yourself or even people you know were affected by it, personally myself I was informed only through novels and movie (Farewell to my Concubine) but man, it was intense.

One of the cast bronze Pelicans outside the GoMA as water feature scultpures by the late Aussie artists Leonard and Kathleen Shillam. I thought it looked lonely :(

Ah, saw this on the ground floor of the Art Gallery (old art housing thing building facing the GoMA) and I was like What the Hell, honestly Warhol was famous for his Poker Face in real life and in media, I know this was supposed to be appealing to smaller kids but come on! Don't cramp Warhol's style man!
Heheheheheheheehehe.

awesome Brisbane trip Part 1

I went to Brisbane for a wedding, but also made the most of it while I was there.

I mostly collected really nicely designed business cards but sometimes I generally focus on how the shops were "branded" overall, I also enjoyed looking at window displays as well ^^

Here goes the first part.

Paddington, a posh street in Brisbane where the retro clothing stores and fashion boutiques are housed, I just love the way the shop logo was designed and how the concept applied to the sanwich board.

And no, I didn't buy anything from there, but managed to find a good stash of different business cards ^^

Iced chocolate with ham and cheese croissaint at the 'Lavazza', a cafe near the GoMA (Gallery of Modern Art), nice, very fresh and filling (of course it was filling it was mostly cream!)

L (the bride) drove me past Chinatown, didn't get to see it but glad I caught the sign with me cammy while in car, I like the way the designer managed to incorporate the head and tail of the dragon into the western styled font with subtlety instead of opting for really fugly supposedly takeaway styled fonts (especially Chow Fan, what the Hell is that!?), so whoever designed it I give you my respect!

By the way I took a photo of the awesome white striped red curtain back at the bride and groom's house, I couldn't help it, the lighting was just right and everything XD

Graduation (sweet, thanks mum and dad).
Auckland Art Fair '09 (got to talk to some awesome people in the fields, so double sweet).
Had $8 chips with a friend of mine plus her 2 other flatties while checking out each other's portfolio and photos of cats (best thing ever).

And now that I'm back, it's back to the drawing board, you'd wish, more like Microsoft Wording.

I think one way to tell if your lineworks need more beef is when you scan it and see it on the screen and go 'damn that line needs some extra fat-loving!'

Hey guys

Firstly, as you have noticed, I changed my banner, hopefully it's more awesome than the previous one, as I decided to make this site less formal (as it it wasn't that informal already XD)

I'll also like to say thanks to me all super awesome followers *jab jabbity jab jab jab, that's right I'm jabbing your eye balls* for jabbing me when I dont' update.

Also, to make up for long time no postie, here are a selection of my personal faves, these images are part of a portfolio which I prepared for a job in concept design / illustrator / matte painting, which I have yet to hear back from.

Just literally few minutes ago I sent out design samples to a T-shirt company in NZ, hopefully they think my designs are awesome enough, if not, then I'll post 'em here next time for y'all to see XD

images you want to use for your promotion, please let them all be the same size 'cause it'd be more professional looking.

the kind of movement you're looking for (do you want texts to go zoom zoom zoom across?)

if you got your own logo/preferred font/size/colour let me know and I'll need to know what position you'd like them in (i.e. front of images? bottom right? or not appear until right at the end?

catch-phrases would be a nice touch too!

My partner pointed out to me that it was quite difficult to read so I made it much easier to be read within 2 seconds, say if you were walking down the street and only have so much attention span left.

Drawings.

Pen on brown paper.

Did them after the vinyl series for second semester's final exhibition.

After holding the X-Acto knife for a while, it felt weird holding an actual pen again, got this feeling like 'whoa, aren't I supposed to be peeling something away after I finalise this stroke?', but Hans Bellmer was a great influence at the back of my mind, maybe, what a draughtsman he was, and you think they put the hype on Dali ^^

You may have already seen one of them in my Portfolio section.

Shape.

Form.

Plane.

Blah.

All I know is that, when you can just keep on drawing without any interruptions for hours, it feels pretty bloody good.

Articles I find useful from the Artist Alliance

I spent most of my day today reading articles on Artist Alliance, and I have come across some very insightful articles that are not only useful but very personally relating at the same time.

A lovely and most straight up essay from Bill Cookes, talking about how to select the most appropriate bookshop to sell your art books and ways to approach galleries, titled, What Are Galleries For.

And another equally useful article by Alex Stone, Finding the Right Gallery, in which the author expressed the personal experience of finding sponsorship and approaching galleries, I found it very personal 'cause I believe it relates to just about every artist (including me of course).

But the first article I looked at, Finding the Right Gallery - Good Advice, was what drew me into reading further on, being written by a practising dealer gallery owner, Mr Gillian Thomas.

I also read Arty-Farty Dole, though only skimmed through it, if anyone want to read it for interest then go right ahead.

Hope anybody find them as beneficial as I do.

Heya

The predecessor of the vinyl works was when I discovered the scraps at sign writing stores, so I cut out shapes of strawberries and stuck them all over the window at George Fraser Gallery, when our tutors let us have the space for a month so we can have an open studio practice, and eventually got some silver vinyls and stuck them on the ceiling, why? 'cause I can!

Click click clickity click click click!

And.... this is what came to for my second semester's exhibition meow, all vinyl! I carve out the 'strokes' and leave the white on, and the second and third photo is what happens when I literally cut around it.

Hello, in case you're wondering why the blog is called Evo-Lyn, well, here's my answer:

I've been slack with updates.

'Cause I know, at the back of my head, there are some works of mine that will not breathe their last dusty breath until they've been showcased on this bloggie.

Until any further notice, I present you, one of my achievements last year, which is a neatly bound book of my succinct selection of works in a portfolio format, which I am very proud to say that is now owned by the University of Auckland, Elam School of Fine Arts Library, you can find it in the Artist Book Collection (where they will ask you to go behind the counter and flip through it with cottton gloves, schmancy, no?). If you really got there? Ask for Evolution Vinyl, yeah!

Originally the work was intended to be a portfolio of my second semester last year of the best works I've done and also to show that there were other works that led to the final exhibition, and I cannot express how much I am ultra psyched to be selected by the Fine Arts Library.

The book was bound by Rachel meow. *scratches R's bloggie*

My first letterhead.

Although this is not a real template but a jpegs image, I welcome you to download it for free and use it for personal use.

Any infringement to copyright laws globally will not put me in a placid mood.

I've tried printing it exactly A4, but my printer hates me, so the best bet is to centralise the image and print it between 90-100%, nonetheless there will always be a border, unless if you can de-evil your print settings.
